Latest Trends in Logistics Supply Chain Software

Logistics supply chain software is gaining in popularity as more and more companies grasp the importance of having a global presence to survive in a dynamic business environment.  Having a supply chain management solution in place is not enough to keep pace with the competition today, so more companies are paying attention to the latest technology trends to gain additional advantage.

One of the latest trends in the industry is implementing a solution to manage the inherent risk in global outsourcing.  In the last several years, outsourcing has become a common strategy for many businesses, in addition to using logistics supply chain software.  Companies that outsource can save costs for labor and raw materials, but there are risks that go along with these benefits.  Some companies are so eager to take advantage of low labor costs in other parts of the world that they don’t stop to consider the hidden costs and risks that go along with that strategy.  One of the greatest risks is one a surprising number of companies don’t consider:   higher transportation and inventory costs.

An example of these risks are the delays in delivery time due to terrorism, quality control, and damage issues caused by a long supply line.  Also, swings in the value of currency create risk when the supply chain is extended.  Backlash against your business can also occur in some foreign countries when prevailing working conditions are abusive and wages are ridiculously low.

To manage this risk, companies have adapted a number of strategies that vary depending on the probability of each inherent risk.  Some companies have pulled back operations in countries that have political instability.  Others have lobbied foreign countries to improve conditions and wages for their workers.  Companies that are proactive in managing the risks that are inherent to outsourcing are much more likely to reap benefits from the strategy.

Another recent trend in logistic supply chain software is an improvement to the Toyota Production System model, also known as “lean manufacturing.”  A vast majority of Fortune 500 companies have already adapted this practice, and some are looking to improve upon it with the Six Sigma methodology.  Six Sigma identifies and reduces process variation and was pioneered by companies such as General Electric and Motorola.  It helps to eliminate waste even more by enabling companies to understand and reduce process variations while increasing the speed and flow of the supply chain.  It focuses on the flow of logistics, capabilities, and discipline as guiding forces for solving any challenges that a global-based logistics network can present.

Any supplier in the business of manufacturing and stocking goods for delivery to a retailer or consumer balances the scales that weigh the impact of negative consequences from having excess inventory against the perils of having too little inventory in stock, expecially when working with logistics supply chain software and the principles of just-in-time inventory.  There are ways to reduce the risks of this pick-your-poison position in which businesses find themselves.  Service level agreements (SLA) are a common approach to addressing the situation.  With an SLA, the manufacturer negotiates a certain level of service with a supplier.  A common SLA requires a supplier to achieve a specific fraction of demand from their inventory over a specified time.  There are pros and cons to this method, and most problems occur when the time period in the SLA is too short.

Expect more trends to emerge as logistics supply chain software and practices become even more popular.

Hardware Firewalls and Software Firewalls

computer hardware

Article by Debbie Jacobsen

There are two types of firewalls: hardware firewall and software firewall. A hardware firewall is a physical device that is located in between the internet/network connection and the computer/s on the network. A software firewall is also known as a personal firewall. Software firewalls are installed on individual computers. Many people use a combination of both hardware and software firewall, as each offers a unique blanket of protection.

If your home or business contains more than three computers that all share an internet connection, you should be using a hardware firewall, as this device will protect the entire network. A hardware firewall acts as a barrier between the internet and all the computers that share the internet connection, providing protection from hackers, spyware, worms and curiosity seekers. In most cases, a hardware firewall for a network is more economical than purchasing software firewall software licenses for each computer on the network. Hardware firewalls vary in price, depending on how many computers they are designed to protect and the type of features included.

Software firewalls are great for protecting individual computers. They are often referred to as “personal firewalls”, because they watch over all data entering and leaving the PC and also provide protection for personal information. A software firewall is a must for any laptop computer that is used on public networks such as those you would find in airports, hotels, and coffee shops. Because the software firewall is installed on the laptop itself, it is always safeguarding you no matter where whose network you’re on.

There is a fairly new type of firewall that is a hardware firewall, but it is designed to offer protection for only one computer. This firewall is in the form of a PCI card that is installed internally in an empty PCI slot on a computer. It also comes as a PC card for laptops, installing in an available PCMCIA slot. Firewall cards were developed for business networks, and are designed to work with a firewall policy server to provide tamper-proof, impenetrable protection for office PC’s and mobile users.

Regardless of which type of firewall you choose – hardware or software – one thing is for certain: If you connect to the internet with your computer or laptop, you MUST have firewall protection. Firewalls keep intruders and malware out, and personal information in. Not using a firewall, even if you don’t think you have anything of value to protect, is just asking for trouble!

More and more people are starting to use both a hardware firewall and a personal firewall due to the ever-increasing security risks associated with internet use. This is a good idea for those who spend a lot of time online, because each type of firewall offers a unique type of protection. Using both hardware and software firewalls, you get the absolute best protection from hackers, hidden spyware, viruses, and identity theft.

A firewall should be your first line of defense when it comes to computer security, but by no means should it be your only protection. Even with a good firewall, you still need to use and antivirus and anti-spyware product.
