Like all machines with moving parts, your computer’s hardware can breakdown. Computer hardware problems are a common occurrence for new and old PCs. However, some of the computer hardware problems can be eliminated with just a few clicks or tweaks. Here are the top six PC hardware problems and easy solutions to fix them.

PC wont recognize my USB camera

This is one of the most common PC hardware problems. First check the camera menu to ensure that the USB Mode is configured. It’s usually called USB storage. Before plugging in the camera, turn it on. This action can usually solve your problem.

Strange Monitor Colors.

First check your monitor’s VGA cable to make sure it is firmly secured to your PC’s video card base. If it’s a screw type, check to make sure the pins and screws are aligned properly. Also try removing the VGA cable while your PC is off and reconnecting it. After it’s properly fitted, turn your PC back on.

Jumpy Mouse

One of the most common PC hardware problems is a jumpy mouse. In essence, a jumpy mouse is a dirty mouse. If you have a track and ball mouse, simply turn it over and open the ball container, blow out the excess debris and lint. Also, clean off the dirt that lines the rollers. For an optical mouse, eliminate the dust that has collected around the optical sensor.

Weak Laptop Battery.

All batteries have a life cycle. And if you’ve had your laptop for a while, its more than likely that you are in need of a new battery. However, you might try using different power options to squeeze a bit more life out of your battery. Double click the battery icon in the lower right corner, choose the power saver plan from the three default choices. The defined power plans can be further edited to optimize your laptop battery life by clicking the “Change Plan Settings” option located under your plan title. This allows you to further manage your laptop power usage while on battery and plugged in.

Computer Freeze

Heat can be a major culprit and cause all kind of PC hardware problems. The number one problem it causes is your computer to freeze or lockup. Your computer temperature is controlled by the internal fan. Removing the dust from around the fan can work wonders. This is highly recommended before you decide to buy a new fan or heat sink. If hardware is not the problem, try tweaking your system to cut down on the hard drive and CPU work. For ways to cut down on high CPU usage, check out Cause of High CPU Usage

PC is noisy

There are several reason for a noisy PC. A loose case can cause vibration which leads to constant noise. An overworked hard drive is caused by constant accessing which in some PCs can be disturbing. Beeping during start up is also and indication of hardware failure. You should Google beep codes to decipher this code.

All in all, PC hardware problems can be quickly solved with simple.

Hardware Firewalls and Software Firewalls

Article by Debbie Jacobsen

There are two types of firewalls: hardware firewall and software firewall. A hardware firewall is a physical device that is located in between the internet/network connection and the computer/s on the network. A software firewall is also known as a personal firewall. Software firewalls are installed on individual computers. Many people use a combination of both hardware and software firewall, as each offers a unique blanket of protection.

If your home or business contains more than three computers that all share an internet connection, you should be using a hardware firewall, as this device will protect the entire network. A hardware firewall acts as a barrier between the internet and all the computers that share the internet connection, providing protection from hackers, spyware, worms and curiosity seekers. In most cases, a hardware firewall for a network is more economical than purchasing software firewall software licenses for each computer on the network. Hardware firewalls vary in price, depending on how many computers they are designed to protect and the type of features included.

Software firewalls are great for protecting individual computers. They are often referred to as “personal firewalls”, because they watch over all data entering and leaving the PC and also provide protection for personal information. A software firewall is a must for any laptop computer that is used on public networks such as those you would find in airports, hotels, and coffee shops. Because the software firewall is installed on the laptop itself, it is always safeguarding you no matter where whose network you’re on.

There is a fairly new type of firewall that is a hardware firewall, but it is designed to offer protection for only one computer. This firewall is in the form of a PCI card that is installed internally in an empty PCI slot on a computer. It also comes as a PC card for laptops, installing in an available PCMCIA slot. Firewall cards were developed for business networks, and are designed to work with a firewall policy server to provide tamper-proof, impenetrable protection for office PC’s and mobile users.

Regardless of which type of firewall you choose – hardware or software – one thing is for certain: If you connect to the internet with your computer or laptop, you MUST have firewall protection. Firewalls keep intruders and malware out, and personal information in. Not using a firewall, even if you don’t think you have anything of value to protect, is just asking for trouble!

More and more people are starting to use both a hardware firewall and a personal firewall due to the ever-increasing security risks associated with internet use. This is a good idea for those who spend a lot of time online, because each type of firewall offers a unique type of protection. Using both hardware and software firewalls, you get the absolute best protection from hackers, hidden spyware, viruses, and identity theft.

A firewall should be your first line of defense when it comes to computer security, but by no means should it be your only protection. Even with a good firewall, you still need to use and antivirus and anti-spyware product.

How to Become a Reseller of PC Hardware and Software

Want to learn how to become a reseller of computer hardware and software?

Good! You’re on the right track, kind of, sort of.

Why only a half-hearted pat on the back?

Because becoming a reseller shouldn’t be thought of in a vacuum. The days of being able to grow a successful business, purely on the basis of reselling PC hardware and software, has seen its better days.

Why? Because the profit margins on most PC hardware and software reselling run somewhere between anemic and non-existent.

Today, to become a reseller of computer hardware and software, you need to be thinking of additional related revenue streams such as installation, customization, training, and ongoing service.

That’s not to say that if you’re figuring out how to become a reseller that you absolutely must follow a prescribed business-salvation plan. But you need to be honest enough with yourself to recognize that reselling is a brutal business, it has been a brutal business since at least the mid-1990′s, and that the only way for most resellers of computer hardware and software to survive and thrive is by getting involved in selling value-added services to their customers.

What kinds of value-added services? It largely depends on whether you try to sell to “everyone”, or whether you’re smart enough to focus primarily on B2B (business to business), where there’s a lot more at stake with IT and the potential for loads of recurring revenue.

So if you want to become a reseller that focuses on the B2B segment, primarily local small businesses, consider offering the following 4 services.

Before you can make sound hardware and software product recommendations, you really need to spend some time getting to know your customers’ true IT needs, what they already own, where their businesses are headed in the next 2-4 years, and what IT problems they currently face. As this is more of a consulting service rather than a traditional reseller role, you should most certainly charge a nominal fee for your Technology Assessment Services. While there’s little value-added in just un-boxing equipment and plugging it in, there’s tremendous value-add in the software patching, data migration, integration work, and customization. Again, as this is more of a consulting service, you should be charging extra for Systems Installation Services and strongly recommending them for any of your customers who don’t have in-house IT support. While Fortune 1000 companies usually have formal plans for employee software training, small businesses rarely have this luxury. As a result, the only training employees often receive is from their reseller. Even if your customers can only afford to pay your company for an hour or two of ad-hoc one-on-one training with each employee, this training can make an enormous difference to your customers getting better utilization from their newly purchased systems. Again, add this to the list of easy incremental sales for most customers. When your customers have how-to or troubleshooting questions, customers rarely have the expertise or patience to deal with multiple vendors each pointing the finger at each other. Solve this problem for your customers, with a single point of contact help desk. Once again, this is a relatively easy, high-margin incremental revenue source that’s very conducive to selling on a subscription basis.

Most entrepreneurs, when thinking about how to become a reseller of computer hardware and software, just focus on what reseller programs to join. While you certainly do need to have your favored product lines, the harsh financial realities of becoming a reseller in this day and age demand that you diversify into higher margin value-added consulting services.

In this short article, we’ve introduced you to some simple strategies to take the brutally competitive, low-margin prospect of becoming a reseller and turn that into a much more lucrative value-added IT consulting business.
