Tips For Playing Original Supaplex PC Game

Despite its cult following among old-school computer game fans, Supaplex is rapidly fading to a memory, even for its most devoted players.  While freeware and shareware versions of the game are available online for download, tutorials on “how to play” aren’t as easy to find. Use the tips below to help play your way through this new and unfamiliar territory, Supaplex’s increasingly-complex levels.

The game’s loveable little hero is Murphy, a red pac-man face that eats his way through the game with the required number of infotrons while evading obstacles to reach the exit portal. You move him up, down, left or right by clicking the arrow keys and holding for constant motion. Murphy cuts through the green squares, consumes the required number of bright, multi-colored infotrons, then disappears inside the “E” once he’s finished.

The “base” or green squares fill most of the game. “Hardware” defines the borders and sometimes forms rooms or boxes. Brown hardware can be “blown open” with tiny explosive blue disks that are either pushed or placed against it in order to access trapped infos or access the “E” if necessary. Careful–an explosion of any kind in the game can kill Murphy if he’s too close.

Murphy’s disks come in three “tab” types: orange, yellow, and red. Orange can be moved around and are subject to “gravity”, meaning they can fall on top of Murphy and kill him if he removes the green beneath. Movie can push the disks around and off of hardware and green squares if he needs to, or drop zonks on them and create an explosion.

The classic yellow disks can be pushed through any open space and explode only when the “timer” is pushed, while red ones are eaten by Murphy and expelled later using the “space bar”, when Murphy positions them to explode hardware or zonk piles. But Murphy has to move quick as soon as the disk “appears” to prevent the explosion from killing him.

Throughout the game are “spools” which Murphy sometimes passes through to access different rooms. Some spools let Murphy travel back and forth; others are “one-way” portals (meaning another spool or an explosive is necessary for exit).

Murphy’s foes include Zonks, little grey cannonballs, can “kill” Murphy if they fall on him, while treacherous snik-snaks, tiny pairs of scissors, often pursue Murphy. Special orange-tabbed discs can fall on top of and kill Murphy.

Even helpful parts of the game are sometimes harmful to the hero. Falling infos are fatal, along with clouds of blue star-like “electrons” — they can turn into infotrons if Murphy pushes a zonk on them and “kills” them, or they can explode Murphy by touching him first.

”Bugs” are somtimes lurking within green squares, a visible lightening bolt charges inside that “shock” Murphy and kill him. “Gravity” games cause Murphy to free-fall through cleared spaces and needs a solid surface to travel up or around–such as green spaces, hardware, even zonks, infos, and disks.

Murphy’s foes can also be helpful when it comes to strategy. Zonks can be pushed on top of snik-snaks or electrons to kill them. Push a zonk on an orange-tab disk to make it explode and open hardware or move an obstacle.

Once Murphy escapes (or creatively employs) any obstacles and eats the required number of infotrons, all he needs it to reach the “E” and touch it to escape the game and win. Some games are simple (the first is just an “eat and win” scenario). Others are more complicated, includins mazes formed by hardware or spools, or a roomful of snik-snaks guarding the only infotron needed to win.

There are tips and tricks that came keep even the toughest levels from defeating your willpower to play. Such as the three “skips” traditionally allowed, so if a level is too tough at first, you can move ahead and come back to it.
Snik-snaks, orange disks, and electrons are all useful for opening locked “boxes” or rooms” — drop a zonk or use a second desk to blow them up. Whereas, an info dropped on a cloud of electrons creates more infotrons than using a disk or a zonk. Experience players learn never to be fooled by the multiple exits which appear in a single game — more than one “E” may be available, but all are equally good for escape.

Some potentially deceptive footfalls include Murphy’s friends or foes, so the common-sense tips below can help Murphy navigate sudden roadblocks. Snik-snaks can be “trapped” in a small space if any exits are blocked. Both snik-snaks and electrons sometimes fall into a “trance” or pattern which can be broken by a sudden movement, so be careful if you let Murphy near. Some games require a strip of green or a “ramp” left intact for pushing a disk or a zonk into “drop” position — this includes “gravity” games and regular ones (since gravity always applies to everyone except Murphy and a select few others). “Holes” in the hardware “floor” have a gravity effect for orange disks, zonks, and infos.

These tips, and plenty of time, will make you a Supaplex wizard in no time — so download a copy and start playing to uncover the tricks, secrets (and incredible challenge) of Supaplex.

Computer Game Addiction and the Big Mistake Parents Make With Kids

Article by Dr. Brent Conrad

In 2007 the American Psychiatric Association (APA) issued a statement on the inclusion of “video game addiction” as an official disorder in the next published version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).

Despite acknowledging that “a child who spends excessive amount of time playing video games may be exposed to violence and may be at higher risk for behavioral and other health problems”, the APA concluded that video game addiction did not warrant official diagnostic status at the time. However, the association also stated that inclusion in future editions of the DSM would be considered “if the science warrants it.”

Regardless of whether video game or computer game addiction is officially designated as a clinical disorder, some gamers clearly demonstrate unhealthy and excessive levels of play.

For example, a teenager who consistently spends most of his non-school hours playing computer games, chooses video games over spending time with friends, quits activities he used to enjoy, and has deteriorating school grades may indeed have a problem keeping his computer game habits under control.

In situations like these, concerned parents often attempt to intervene and help their child develop more moderate and healthier gaming habits.

An Easy Mistake to Make

Unfortunately, well-meaning parents occasionally make a critical mistake that can greatly reduce the likelihood of a successful intervention.

They get stuck on making their child admit that he is “addicted”.

For most addiction treatments and interventions, it is assumed that one must acknowledge the addiction and admit that a problem exists. For example, overcoming alcoholism is much more likely if one acknowledges the addiction and how much damage it has caused in his / her life.

However, for children and teens parents *do not* need to convince them that their play is problematic or that they are addicted to video games. A strong state of denial about harmful consequences is almost a prerequisite for an addiction to develop and persist. Those who are addicted to video games (children, adolescents, and adults) will deny negative personal consequences of excessive gaming and will downplay how their habits impact others who care about them.

Even as numerous negative consequences become apparent to others (failing grades, deteriorating health, and poor interpersonal relationships) a teen may explain these happenings in a way that does not implicate computer games. The goal is to rationalize and justify the behavior so that gaming can continue. With children and adolescents, parents do not need to let them reach “rock bottom” because they can initiate change on their behalf before they are ready or willing to acknowledge the problem.

As previously mentioned, unlike an adult who is addicted to a substance or a behavior (e.g., alcohol, drugs, gambling, and computer games), a child does not need to admit that he is addicted to games for change to happen. Parents have the power (or can regain the power) to make decisions that are in a child’s best interests. Yes, the reasoning behind decisions should be explained, but they do not need to *convince* the child that the reasoning is correct prior to taking action.

Is There Hope?

When clear limits are set and enforced, when consequences for violations are expected, when rewards for cooperation are possible, when the ease of access is reduced, when alternative activities are encouraged, and when enabling is reduced, children and teens can recover from computer game addiction…even if they never fully acknowledged it as a problem.

Crazy Machines: The Wacky Contraptions – A game Review

Crazy Machines: The Wacky Contraptions is a great mind boggling game for the PC. It provides lots of mental stimulation to have your brain on fire with its quest to solve problems. There are lots of perks and just a few flaws that make this game ideal for everyone who enjoys completing puzzles.

When you were a kid, you probably loved doing puzzles. Remember the ones with little cardboard pieces that fit together eventually forming a picture? Well sometimes as we get older, that type of entertainment is just not enough. Luckily there are computer games such as Crazy Machines to help bridge the gap. The game contains over 200 puzzles to solve and an open sandbox mode to provide even more creative play.

The game begins with fairly simple puzzles and after about twelve puzzles the game starts to throw in some really challenging pieces to solve. So don`t be discouraged if you find the game fairly simple to begin with. It has been noted though that some people found some of the games toward the end to be very easy, almost like they were thrown into the mix to help create the 200 game numbers on the box. However, it wasn`t too badly reflected on the overall game.

The actual set up of the game is neat and simple. The puzzle you are to solve is right in the middle of the screen and the items are located in a special box. To put the items together you simply click and drag. If you forget what an item is used for you just sway over top of the icon and a message will appear telling you what it does.

There are many choices to use when you`re building and solving puzzles. There are; power sources, wires, balloons, gears, conveyer belts, boxes, catapults, pipes, widgets, steam pistons, working blimps, cannons, dynamite and robots to help. There are even pieces that help to make other pieces work well and help simplify the project. Each piece contains its own properties so you really have to experiment a little to figure out what does what. And it is nice to see that the game allows for natural consequences such as a balloon popping when it blows to close to a hot element. The real properties of the game help you feel like a real inventor working vigorously in a real science lab.

There are three music selections to choose from. The music is soft and mellow and does not distract from game play and brain thinking abilities, however if you need something else or a bit more lively music, you can just download it from your PC to listen to.

This game is comparable to other puzzle solving games, but it does over more puzzles and more challenging ones. This game will not disappoint any level of puzzlers as it will entertain and stimulate even the cleverest of brains! The game is also an excellent price and can be purchased anywhere PC games are sold.

The graphics on this game were noted as being pretty basic as compared to other PC games. However, it wasn`t a huge deal for puzzle solves as they concentrated on the puzzle on hand and how well and fast they could solve it. Sure better graphics would have been nicer on the eyes but might have created a bigger price tag.
