After all of these years of cyber threats, you would think that we, as a society, would be closer to getting rid of these problems. This is not the case. Instead of the problem getting better, it is only getting worse. We have more attacks that are new to the internet every day, more than we have ever had before. Even worse than that, these attacks are becoming more sophisticated in both the technology that they use and the targets of their attacks. The attacks are now hitting particular companies and government facilities instead of just being wide ranged attacks that would affect everybody.
The attackers are no longer just kids in their basement that are bored on a Friday night. The attacks that we are seeing now are too complex for that. No, these are teams of people that are sponsored by someone or some government. The level of the attacks are able to show that there is no way that one person is able to coordinate these efforts. It would take too much money and man power. There has to be someone financing the operation and on a large scale. This goes for attacks that are against the government as well as attacks that are trying to perform large scale theft.
Some of the attackers are performing a mix and match of different techniques that are already known to anyone who is deep in the security community. Because of this, some in the community do not believe the problem is as pervasive as it really is. But just because they are using techniques that are older, only means that they are using well worn software practices. This indicates that these are not rookies when it comes to making large, complex software programs. We are not talking about script kiddies putting a script together. We are talking about complicated malware that is being modified and turned into an attack similar to its original purpose but created for more effective results.
The governments of the world, especially high target governments like the United States, must make cyber security one of their top priorities. They are only now getting the message that someone is going to try and cause their country damage over the internet. If we are not serious about our security then they will be able to. Training the normal person to be able to spot some hacking techniques is not good enough. They may have the skill to block some of the attacks that may happen but they do not have the imagination to stop a new attack that could eventually happen. This is where recruiting well known hackers come into play. Hiring these talented will allow them to use their talents to help the country. It may be hard to recruit people with this much talent. People like that are inquisitive and they like to be challenged. The government must be able to cater to their needs. If not, then they will go with someone who will.
